Technical notice and schedule extension

Posted by Jeff Kupperman on Wednesday, March 03, 2004 at 11:00:00 EST

Some members have reported technical problems entering and editing resolutions longer than a couple paragraphs. The problem was limited to certain browsers, and I it seems to be resolved now.

Partially for this reason, we have extended the schedule once again. Education resolutions should be submitted to a regional vote no later than March 13. Resolutions on Media and Information should be submitted before March 27.

Submit your resolutions!

Posted by Jeff Kupperman on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at 10:06:00 EST

Right now, the topics of "Education" and "Media & Information" are both accepting resolutions. Anyone can write and submit a resolution -- just go to your Workspace and click "start a new resolution." When you are finished, click the link to submit it to a "regional" vote among peers in your country. The resolution receiving the most votes within your country will be automatically submitted to an international, GSC-wide vote.

Let your voice be heard!

"Media & Information" Chosen as Second Topic; Schedule Extended

Posted by Jeff Kupperman on Sunday, February 15, 2004 at 21:01:00 EST

"Media and Information" has been chosen as the second round agenda topic! Several topics had received slightly more votes, but with no clear favorite, a 9.1% probability was enough under the agenda voting's chance-enhanced system. There is a multitude of things a resolution under this topic could address, including access to information and the Internet; censorship; or restrictions on media content. Make sure when you write your resolutions that they propose an agreement or action that is concrete and specific, yet global in scope.

"Education" is still in the resolution-writing and the national voting phase ( known in the GSC as "regional voting"), so you are welcome to submit proposals on either topic.

Speaking of regional voting, I have extended the schedule to allow more time for everyone to write resolutions and discuss them. Look at the schedule at left for the new deadlines.

Second Round Agenda Setting Begins

Posted by Jeff Kupperman on Sunday, February 01, 2004 at 10:00:00 EST

The second round has begun with another agenda setting phase, and all the topics besides "education" are again available as options. For the next two weeks, you have a chance to renew your arguments and vote for your preferred topic or topics. (The discussions from the previous agenda-setting phase are still accessible from the agenda area, but please put new posts in the discussion area for the current vote.)

At the same time, resolution-writing and country-level ("regional") voting is going on under the topic of Education. Please give your attention to those resolutions as well!

EDUCATION CHOSEN AS AGENDA TOPIC

Posted by Jeff Kupperman on Sunday, January 25, 2004 at 01:07:00 EST

The first agenda selection phase has ended, and "Education" was selected as our first topic. With an 11.7% chance of passing, it was the second most popular option after Peace and Security (which had a 12.7% chance), but since the agenda topic is determined by probability, every option had a chance of winning. If your favorite topic was not chosen, you will have another chance when the next round starts in a week.

Now, on to resolution writing and regional voting!

(Please note: at this time your REGION is your country.)

At this time, you may start writing resolutions on the topic of Education. Finished resolutions can then be submitted to a "regional" vote among people from your country, and the winning resolution from each country will be automatically submitted to a final GSC-wide vote. (In contrast to the agenda voting, resolutions are selected by plurality -- the one with the most votes -- not by probability.)

Anyone can start a resolution by going to the "workspace" area. Each resolution author can add other authors to the resolution, who can make comments or write their own revisions. (The original author chooses which revision will be submitted to a vote.)

Resolutions should be concrete proposals that address the issue of Education in ways that are important to the global community. In other words, a resolution should address problems in your country, but it shouldn't ONLY be of interest to people in your country. You are strongly encouraged to collaborate widely to make the strongest resolution possible. The regional vote is scheduled to end February 21, but as that gets close let me know if you need more time.

Once a resolution is submitted to a vote, it cannot be changed, so please take time to gather a variety of opinions and write your resolution carefully!
